Hello from Henry B!

Date: October 2024

{item_alt_tag}

Welcome

Miss Hearle, Headteacher

Dear Parents,

I am sitting writing this looking out at a rare day of sunshine and hoping that more of these days are to come! We have certainly dealt with rain of biblical proportions in the last 8 weeks! Thank you to our site team, for managing these extremes of weather so well and keeping the site safe and secure for our community.

The Science refurbishment project is well under way, and we are looking forward to the completion of the first 4  fully refurnished laboratories in the new year.

The science team are to be commended for the way in which they are dealing with their somewhat itinerant life at the moment, as well as our young people who are showing the true HB spirit of resilience and resourcefulness.

The school is celebrating a magnificent set of GSCE results, and I hope you have seen the headlines on our website and in the local press, as well as in The Time newspaper.

We are so proud of the young people who achieved these results, and we look forward to seeing them to hear about their journey into post 16 education at our Presentation of Certificates evening on the 28th of November.

I have enjoyed seeing so many of our students who have received Headteacher awards already this term.   Year 8 have done us proud with their hosting responsibilities for our Open Mornings and, in total, we had 1,222 people visit us over the course of September and October.

We have also welcomed children from out of catchment primary schools for a Year 5 taster day.

Extracurricular clubs, clinics and sporting activities are up and running, and our AGP is fully operational after a brief pause for health and safety reasons, which thankfully, was not, in the end, an issue for our school.

We have welcomed many new community users to our site this term and if you do know of anyone looking for a place to run an event or club, please do direct them to our community website page for more details.

After half-term, the Expressive Arts team will begin the final countdown to our whole school production of ‘Everyone is Talking about Jamie’ at the Theatre Royal in January 2025.  The hard work and commitment of our young people and my colleagues involved is incredible. Thank you all so much.

The clocks go back at the start of the half-term break, which means from November students may be travelling/walking home in twilight conditions. Please could I ask that you ensure that they can be seen with, for example, reflective strips on their bags.

I leave you with an incredible statistic from last academic year:

Last year, the school ran 59 different trips across all year groups offering 6,662 student experiences.

With my best wishes to you and your families,

Miss Hearle

Well done Prague and well done WDNL (Mr Donnelly's tutor group). What will October bring?!

Freshers Fair

On Friday, 13th September, the Sports Hall was transformed into a Freshers’ Fair, featuring over 40 stalls. This event was designed to showcase the wide array of clubs and after-school activities available to all students.

Enthusiastic existing club members were on hand to explain their clubs and sign up new members. Now that we have completed the first half-term of extra-curricular clubs, we are hopeful that every student has attended at least one club. It is not too late to join a club – please feel free to attend and turn up on the night.

To find out more about our clubs, please visit our website:

The Beaufort Book Society

The Beaufort Book Society stands ready to ignite a passion for literature and stand as a beacon for young readers, seeking to immerse themselves in their imaginations. Our book club is designed, not only to ignite enthusiasm for literature, but also to enhance critical thinking and communication skills.

Our young people enjoy a variety of genres and have some fantastic recommendations to share:

  1. "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas
A contemporary paragon of social justice literature, this novel tackles important themes of race, identity, and activism, encouraging readers to engage with current societal issues.
  2. "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern - This enchanting tale of competition within a mysterious circus transports readers to a world where the impossible becomes reality. The vibrant imagery will ignite your child's imagination.
  3. "A Darker Shade of Magic" by V.E. Schwab - This gripping novel propels readers through parallel Londons, exhilarating their senses while encouraging a love for reading as a means of escapism and discovery.

We meet weekly, where spirited discussions abound, and insights are shared amidst the company of passionate readers. We incorporate games with literary themes, such as charades, murder mysteries and heads-up. We would welcome more young people to join us at Beaufort Book Society, where reading becomes an extraordinary adventure.

Enrichment Week 2024

Enrichment Week is when the school timetable is halted and The Henry Beaufort Staff are able to arrange activities which can extend and enrich the curriculum for all students both in and out of school. Students have the opportunity to work in different groups to their normal timetable and with different staff – whether they are taking part in activities on the school site, on day trips or on residential visits.

Enrichment week 2024 was amazing. It was great for our students to enjoy a week filled with different activities, opportunities and challenges!

Year 7

The Year 7 students attended a 2-night camp in the New Forest and, whilst in school for 2 days, went to the cinema and took part in a rotation of activities which included escape rooms, task master, frisbee, face painting, fun art and many other challenging activities.

As always, camping at Tile Barn was great fun and the weather was kind! Students took part in outdoor adventurous activities, enjoyed a 5km New Forest walk and enjoyed playing lots of games! For some Year 7 students, this was their first experience of a residential trip and it was magical! The students were incredibly well-behaved and really represented the school so well.

Year 8 and Year 9

Year 8 and 9 students had the option to take part in various activities which they chose from the Enrichment Week booklet. They were able to opt into the activities on offer that they thought they would enjoy the most.

France (Year 8)

40 students and staff went on a trip to Normandy, France during Enrichment Week. During the stay at the beautiful Prieuré St Gabriel, students had the opportunity to visit Mont St Michel, the Bayeux Tapestry, the Beach at Carolles, a goat's cheese farm and a chocolate factory. We were greeted by Mado, our ‘Animatrice’ and group leader in France.  Mado was brilliant at encouraging the use of French, hosted our stay and made sure our trip was enjoyable and ran smoothly. She and the HB staff certainly did ensure that this happened and, as a result, the students and staff had the most amazing time!

The staff at the Centre, the Chef and the Driver were hugely complimentary about our students and said that they were the best school group they have ever had in terms of respectfulness, kindness and curiosity! I think it’s safe to say that everybody had the most amazing trip and some wonderful memories were made!

Brecon Beacons (Year 8 and 9)

A group of 48 students headed off to Brecon (Bannau Brycheiniog) to take part in an action-packed week of challenging outdoor activities. Students had the opportunity to walk up Pen y Fan, Caving, canoeing, orienteering, as well as a whole host of team-building activities in the evening. It was great to see all the students embracing new challenges.

Berlin (Year 9)

A group of 40 students headed off to Berlin. On the journey there, everyone nervously listened to the England Football Euro final and, despite the loss, it didn’t dampen the mood of the students.

It was an action-packed week, and the students got to experience so many landmarks and highlights in and around Berlin. The trip included a cruise along the River Spree, the Berlin Zoo and historical visits to the Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust memorial and the Sachsenhausen Concentration camp.

The students were a credit to the school. They were respectful and well-behaved and also had the opportunity to be able to improve and develop their German-speaking skills.

Belgium (Year 9)

This is the first year we have run this trip and it was a great week! Students visited Brussles and Bruges, which are both amazing places. There was a combination of history and culturally enriching opportunities; visiting the Parlamentarium, looking at historical buildings and sights, going on a boat trip and learning about the production of chocolate. Then the fun day at Walibi – a huge amusement park!

Again, the students were amazing!!! A pleasure to take away.

Underwater Art

During the Underwater Art, students worked with an exciting and broad range of materials, from wire and plaster bandage to clay and textiles and created some masterpieces! They enjoyed a day at Bournemouth Oceanarium to get some inspiration for their artwork!

Saints Foundation Football Coaching

A group of students took part in a week of top-quality football coaching delivered by Saints Foundation coaches. The aim of the week was to improve basic skills of passing, shooting and tackling, as well as developing tactical skills and their knowledge of the game. Competitions ran throughout the week, such as a penalty shootout and a crossbar challenge. On Friday, students had the opportunity to visit the Southampton Football Club training ground, and they were given a tour of the stadium with a visit to the shop!

MasterChef

The students made a variety of both sweet and savoury food products throughout the week. During the week their cooking skills improved so much!

Lego Animation

Students who visited LEGOLAND certainly enjoyed what it had to offer and had the opportunity to take part in a workshop called Lego! Camera! Action! Throughout the week, students made their own Lego animation, and the quality of the final animation was exceptional.

Feathers and Fur

This activity was great for those students who love animals! This was an action-packed week when students visited the New Forest Wildlife Park, Hawk Conservancy, Living Rainforest and students even got to walk Alpacas!

Sandbanks

The Sandbanks trip is always a popular trip and understandably so! Over 100 students took part in this activity.  The weather and the conditions were varied, but the students enjoyed a fabulous week taking part in a variety of water sports which included paddleboarding, kayaking, wind surfing, a day on a yacht or speed boat trips, plus many more.

Sports Week

This is a busy week for the students who opt for Sport Week! The students take part in a variety of sporting activities on the school site for 2 days and also enjoy days at Calshot, which involve skiing, Aerotek, Ringo’s, Rifle shooting and Climbing. This week also offers a day of bowling and laser tag and finally a day at Splashdown waterpark! This is a great day trying out all the flumes and rides – Miss Colebourn will tell you how much fun it was!

A huge thank you must go to all the staff who organised, delivered and took part in the activities this week. Without their hard work, this week of fun and culturally enriching opportunities for the students would not be possible.

The students had a great week, and we are already looking forward to Enrichment Week 2025. This is a really unique week, and students will need to make sure that they continue to collect their stamps throughout the year as they work towards this reward week next year.

Creative Writing Club

Greetings to both new and returning writers, The Henry Beaufort Creative Writing Club has thrown itself into a new, exciting year. After our fantastic successes of 2023/2024, with writing competitions and the launch of our first anthology, we are looking forward to seeing where this year takes us.

This year, we are planning more self-publication of individual student stories, as well as competitions, workshops, anthologies, and more!
We meet after school on Wednesdays in P1, and all kinds of writers from all 5-year groups are welcome.

Wellbeing Ambassadors

The Winchester Mental Health Support Team came in to give our new Year 8 and 9 Wellbeing Ambassadors some training and explore ideas about their role in school. Our Wellbeing Ambassadors' role is to be non-judgemental, to be knowledgeable about signs and symptoms of poor mental health, to support and signpost other students to mental health organisations or safeguarding staff, to destigmatise Mental Health by presenting on important topics such as World Mental Health Day in tutor and assemblies and to be positive role models.
