Welcome

Miss S Hearle,
Headteacher

Dear Parents,

It has been a short half-term but with 6 weeks of work still to cram in, it has resulted in a very fast-paced few weeks.

We have seen Year 10 complete their mock exams and Year 11 begin their GCSE exams.

We all wish our Year 11 students good luck and a reminder that online revision after half-term will be crucial to keeping their minds focused on each exam. They have a very long holiday to look forward to once these exams are complete, and we look forward to seeing them for their Leavers Day in July.

Once again, the half-term has been full of extracurricular activities and events for our young people, many of which are detailed in this newsletter.

I do need to single out the superb Under 16 girls football team and their very well-deserved crowning as Hampshire Under 16 champions.

It was a very tense match played on an exceptionally hot late afternoon, and we were so delighted to see not only their skills and confidence on the pitch but their professionalism and good sporting conduct off the pitch.

They were a credit to the school and demonstrated to us all that pride, happiness and ambition can together achieve incredible results.

A huge thank you to all of you who sponsored our 20 colleagues who ran the Romsey Relay marathon last Sunday. We have so far raised £1620 plus gift aid contributions. Any further  donations would be gratefully received so that we can send all of this money on to Naomi House and Jacks Place, the charity chosen by our students.

My congratulations to our Year 10 students who have successfully interviewed for the role of Student Leader, starting now as Year 11 go on study leave.

We have extended the ‘job description’ for this year and I hope that it will give our Student Leaders more opportunities to shine as role models in our school.

After half-term, we welcome our new Year 7 intake for September 25 for their Transition Day as well as hosting our annual primary Sports Festival, a music concert, Celebration events for Years 7-10 and, of course, Enrichment week. Just a selection of the enrichment opportunities available for our young people and students in our Catchment Primary feeder schools this summer.

I look forward to seeing you at your child’s Celebration event in July and, for parents in Year 11, the joy of that final celebration of 5 wonderful years at The Henry Beaufort Leavers Ball .

With my best wishes,

Miss Hearle

News from around the School

Taster Day at St Hilda's College, Oxford University

As part of Oxford University’s outreach programme, available to all Hampshire schools, fourteen of our highest-attaining Year 10 students and Miss Shelton enjoyed a taster day at St Hilda's College, Oxford University.

We had an introductory talk, a tour of the grounds, a Question and Answer session with some History and English undergraduates, a tutorial with a Computing Professor, and enjoyed a superb lunch!

Poetry Escape Competition

We have had some wonderful entries to our Poetry Escape competition. Congratulations to all entrants, runners-up, and especially our winners!

With 120 entries from students across all year groups, the standard was incredibly high, making it a very tough decision for our judges. A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to write and submit their poems. Your hard work and creativity truly shone through.

We’re also excited to share that many of these entries have been submitted to the Young Writers national competition. I’ll be keeping a close eye on any updates and will let you know as soon as we hear anything!

Well done to all our winners — we’re so proud of you!

Romsey Relay Marathon Staff Fundraiser

On Sunday 18th May, two teams featuring 20 staff members took on the Romsey Relay Marathon, each running 4.2km to complete a marathon as a team.

This is also a House Competition, with all donations counting towards House Points.

The Henry Beaufort School has so far raised £1620 plus gift aid contributions. Any further donations would be gratefully received so that we can send all of this money on to Naomi House and Jacks Place, the charity chosen by our students.

HB crowned U16 Girls Hampshire Cup Winners

Henry Beaufort School is thrilled to celebrate a remarkable achievement by our U16 Girls Football Team, who have been crowned Hampshire Cup Winners!

This outstanding victory is the result of their dedication, teamwork, and passion throughout the season in the district league, district cup, and Hampshire Cup. Along the way, they delivered dominant performances — defeating Purbrook Park 13-1, a 0-1 victory in the quarter-final against Costello, and securing a convincing 6-1 win over Calthorpe in the semi-final to reach the final of the Hampshire Cup.

The final of the Hampshire Cup was played at Winchester City Football stadium. This was a fantastic venue to host the final and made the day even more special. Henry Beaufort’s team was composed of 9 Year 11 students and 4 Year 10 students who played against Priestlands School, from the New Forest. The final score was 4-2 to Henry Beaufort with goals scored by Bethan, Kim and Lucy and resulted in Henry Beaufort being crowned U16 Hampshire Cup Champions and lifting the trophy.

What makes this team even more special is that most of these talented players were also part of the squad that won the U14 Hampshire Cup in 2023. Their sustained excellence is a testament to their passion for the sport and their determination to improve year after year.

The U16 team has consistently demonstrated sportsmanship, hard work, and a love for the game — qualities that have made them true ambassadors for The Henry Beaufort School. Their season has been packed with memorable moments and remarkable results, creating a legacy that will inspire future generations of players. We are incredibly proud of these girls and deeply thankful for their dedication to Girls’ Football at Henry Beaufort.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to RBC Brewin Dolphin Winchester, proud sponsors of The Henry Beaufort Girls Football Team. Their support, including the provision of team kits, has played a vital role in making this season’s success possible.

"RBC Brewin Dolphin Winchester are delighted to be sponsoring Henry Beaufort School for the 2025 football season."

Once again, congratulations to our Hampshire Cup Champions — your hard work and spirit have made The Henry Beaufort School very proud!

Department of Education visits HB

The Henry Beaufort School was pleased to welcome Dr Jonathan Dewsbury, from the Department of Education, together with a delegation from Hampshire Property Services on Tuesday 22nd April 2025, to visit the renovation of our Science Block, due for completion in June 2025.

The renovation is an example of how the school and Hampshire County Council are improving the sustainability of their estate, reducing the carbon footprint and becoming more energy efficient. As well as providing the school with new, state-of-the-art science labs, the building will benefit from new thermally efficient, double-glazed and low-maintenance units. Brickwork and other panels will be insulated, and the roof recovered with a high-performance felt, with additional insulation, and the installation of 140 Photo Voltaic Solar panels on the roof.

Where needed, lighting will be replaced with low-energy LED lighting which will provide a better quality of light, enhancing the teaching spaces and reducing energy costs.

Sue Hearle, Headteacher, said: “We are looking forward to the completion of this project and the benefits it will bring to our school community, providing eight high-tech laboratories that will complement the excellent science teaching and learning at The Henry Beaufort School.”

The Brilliant Club

On Tuesday 20th May, a group of Year 8 students who had taken part in the Brilliant Club Scholars Programme headed to The University of Southampton for their graduation ceremony.

The Scholars Programme gives students in secondary school the opportunity to explore higher education and build key skills to help them succeed in the next stages of their education.

The Year 8 students have taken part in a series of seven university-style tutorials, since Christmas, delivered in-school by a PhD tutor. The tutorials are based on the tutor’s area of research expertise. Students have the opportunity to explore an inspiring, supra-curricular topic whilst developing key academic skills that support their attainment across the curriculum.

Our focus was literary theory. The students investigated different theories, including Marxist, Feminism, Eco-critical and Post-Colonial, and learnt how to analyse texts through the lens of different literary theories.

Students then had to write a final assignment of 1,500-2000 words. This assignment allowed the students to demonstrate their subject knowledge, written communication and critical thinking skills that they have developed throughout the programme.

Some of the feedback on the assignments from the PhD tutor was a reflection of how well the students have done. Some of the comments included:

“Arguments are carefully and astutely articulated throughout the essay”

“This is high-level thinking that you pull off with flair”

“Some of your observations are very sophisticated and insightful”

At the graduation at The University of Southampton, students were presented with their certificates. They also had the opportunity to hear about university life and had a tour of the impressive campus. It was a great day, and the students should be very proud of their achievements! Well done.

Battle of Brains: Students Vs. Teachers

Battle of the Brains: Students vs. Teachers in Epic TTRS Showdown!

Last term, the school was buzzing with excitement as students and staff faced off in a high-energy Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) competition! Representing their school houses, the sharpest minds from both sides stepped up to the challenge — but only one side could claim the crown.

Organised by the Maths Department, the event featured a series of rapid-fire multiplication duels, with each house competing for points, pride, and that all-important house glory. Every correct answer brought their team one step closer to victory.

Highlights from the day included:

  • Incredible improvement from our Year 7, 8 and 9 speedsters, with Florence, Amelia, and Hannah earning the title of Most Improved thanks to their blazing-fast times.
  • A standout performance from Miss Bean, a non-maths specialist, who led the teaching team with confidence and skill — with Mr Lane hot on her heels!
  • House Athens had the highest number of participants, including an impressive 100% turnout from their Year 7 students — surely a key factor in racking up points toward the house cup?

Maths teacher and event organiser, Mr Newman, said, “It was fantastic to see students and staff so engaged. The energy was incredible, and the competition really showcased just how much fun maths can be.”

A huge thank you to everyone who participated, supported, and cheered from the sidelines. We’re already counting down to the next round! But remember — while Athens may have dominated participation, the title of top-scoring house remains a closely guarded secret... for now. Stay tuned!

UKMT Junior Maths challenge

This month we have entered the annual UKMT Junior Maths challenge, which we are always very excited about. Some of our top Year 7 and 8 mathematicians entered the challenge that required them to take their current mathematical knowledge and use it in different, and sometimes obscure, ways. We are eagerly awaiting the results of this challenge, and we will update you in a later newsletter.

Creative Forces Trip

On Friday 25th April, a group of our Year 7 students from a military background had the opportunity to experience a university environment by visiting the University of Winchester for the day.

The University is the institutional lead for the SCiP Alliance (Service Children’s Progression Alliance) and supports research into the gap between attainment and progression for children from military families.  The university’s widening participation team has worked with local and regional partners to run targeted events, such as Creative Forces Day, for children of forces families and their teachers since 2014.  For students from armed forces families, Creative Forces Day is a chance to explore university life and their identity as a service child.

The students participated in a fun subject taster run by university academic staff, getting the students to think creatively and come up with their own human-like creature which could be found on a planet similar to ours.   They also took part in an engaging session on 'What is University?' run by Bath Spa University.  The final activity allowed the students to connect and share their experiences of being a military child in a safe space with other students in similar situations. Y5, 6 and 7 from a number of schools across Hampshire and Wiltshire.  Our students were in groups with students from different schools during the activities and had the opportunity to talk about their experiences with these students.

The students were an absolute credit to Henry Beaufort and represented the school excellently.

Henry Beaufort School Announces Exciting Partnership with Evolve Chiropractic

The Henry Beaufort School is proud to announce a new and exciting partnership with Evolve Chiropractic, a well-respected local chiropractic clinic in Winchester dedicated to healing,  Adapt and Evolve into their best selves.

As part of this collaboration, Evolve Chiro has generously agreed to sponsor one of our school netball teams. Their support has already made a fantastic impact, providing the team with a brand-new, top-of-the-range branded netball kit. The students are thrilled with their new kit and are looking forward to wearing them as they step onto the court for the upcoming district netball league, which kicks off this September.

This partnership marks a positive step in strengthening ties between the school and local businesses, who share a commitment to encouraging active lifestyles and promoting youth sport. Evolve Chiro’s support not only enhances the experience for our netball players but also reinforces the value of community engagement in our extracurricular programs.
