About

This Cambridge National Certificate (CNC) is the equivalent of a GCSE and comprises of an examination at the end of Year 11, alongside two pieces of coursework. One piece of coursework is completed in Year 10, the other is  completed during Year 11. In year 9 students complete tasks that link to both the exam and coursework element.

RO57: Written paper – Health and Wellbeing for Child Development

The exam is a 1 hour 15-minute exam, which is 60% of the course,

Key Topics Covered:

  • Pre-conception Health & Reproduction: Understanding the roles of diet, exercise, and lifestyle for both parents prior to conception, as well as the structure and function of the reproductive system.
  • Antenatal Care & Birth: Covers the signs of pregnancy, antenatal checks, and preparing for the birth.
  • Postnatal Checks & Care: Focuses on newborn care, including postnatal checks and creating a safe, nurturing environment.
  • Childhood Safety: Identifying and preventing accidents, along with recognizing common childhood illnesses

 

 

RO58: NEA – create a safe environment and understand the equipment and nutritional needs of children from birth to five years

This piece of coursework is worth 30%. It focuses on creating safe, nurturing, and hygienic environments for children aged 0-5, along with understanding their nutritional requirements. It covers safety risk assessment, selecting appropriate equipment, and planning meals/feeds.

Key Topics in R058: Create a Safe Environment and Understand Nutritional Needs

  • Safety and Environment: Identifying hazards, preventing accidents, and designing safe indoor/outdoor areas for children in childcare settings.
  • Equipment Selection: Choosing, safety-checking, and assessing the suitability of toys, equipment, and furniture (e.g., cots, highchairs).
  • Nutrition and Diet: Understanding the nutritional requirements for children aged 0-5, including breastfeeding, formula feeding, and the stages of weaning.
  • Food Preparation: Understanding, planning, and preparing safe and nutritious food/meals for children.

RO59: NEA – Understand the development norms of a child from one to five years

This piece of coursework is worth 30%. It focuses on understanding the physical, intellectual, and social developmental norms for children aged one to five years. Tt requires learners to research developmental milestones, observe a child’s progress, and plan/evaluate play activities to support growth.

  • Developmental Norms: Identifying expected physical, intellectual, and social milestones for children aged 1–5 years.
  • Types and Stages of Play: Understanding how different types of play (e.g., imaginative, creative, physical) benefit a child’s development.
  • Observation Methods: Learning how to observe a child, record findings, and ensure confidentiality.
  • Planning Activities: Planning and evaluating specific, age-appropriate activities to support a child’s development in a chosen area
