The staff at The Henry Beaufort School are committed to making every student a better learner, by improving their learning habits. Good learning habits allow students to be resilient, confident and successful learners, who are better prepared for our ever-changing world. The staff at The Henry Beaufort School have embedded the keys ideas of (hb)² in all areas of the curriculum. This was not designed to be a quick process, but one that stands the test of time and becomes woven into the fabric of the school.
The learning habits have been organised into four areas:
Map learning steps out in advance
An honest appraisal of yourself as a learner
Reflect and select what will be useful to you in the future
Monitor and adapt
Have the confidence to work things out for yourself while accepting other people’s ideas.
Use the good learning habits and values of others.
Think about what you are hearing.
Stand in other people’s shoes.
Store the information and the skills to use in other subjects.
Recognise and reduce interruptions to your learning.
Be engaged and find enjoyment in every task.
Recognise your capabilities and learning style. Work to your strengths.
Perserve with challenges, enjoy the struggle. Find the positive in your mistakes.
Delve deeper – don’t take things at face value.
Make good use of resources.
Seek clarity, relevance, meaning and connections
Think rigorously and methodically
Use creative ways to explore possibilities
To build resilience and to develop strategies for getting unstuck, students follow the five B’s.
Think of a solution; what do you already know?
Is there any information on the board or on the walls?
Look at your notes in your exercise book or use a dictionary.
Ask other students for help.
Then, ask your teacher for help.
These four learning habits are displayed in every classroom within the school and are also featured in the Student Handbook. Students are first introduced to (hb)² as part of the Year 7 Learning Day at the start of the Autumn Term.
(HB)² is an integrated part of life at The Henry Beaufort School. In a recent student voice activity, one Year 9 student said, “(hb)² is just part of my lessons now. I do it subconsciously in all of my work.”
We use it like a natural reflex. We know we have to try to figure problems out for ourselves. We know the teacher is there, but we value the fact that we have more independence.’
Year 10
There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.
