Before starting their personal portfolio projects, year 9 students who have opted for this subject, will firstly recap on the Formal/Visual Elements that they explored in their Art lessons in yr7 and 8. Photographic principles and techniques are then introduced to enable students to access the specific skills required for the course. Students will be required to work independently and creatively and have an active interest in all aspects of photography.
Please note: This option cannot be taken with Art, Craft & Design.

GCSE Photography contains two components:
The Personal Portfolio 60%
Students will work on projects from themes which are set by the Art/Photography Department.
Currently these are:
Yr9 – Object
Yr 10 – Object Transformation
Yr11 – Unusual Perspectives (Mock Exam Project)
For each project students will produce supporting studies – artist/photographer research, contact sheets, analysis and annotation. They will need to show evidence of manipulation and editing using computer software and/or manual techniques such as collage, stitching etc before creating their Final Photographic Outcome, incorporating these techniques and making clear links with artists/photographers studied.
The Externally Set Assignment 40% (Exam)
Students will work on an externally set theme
Students will produce preparatory research, photographic studies and experimentation/development for around 10 weeks
Students will have 10 hours of sustained focus to produce their personal responses – finished photographs. Students will need to be able to meet deadlines and work independently, imaginatively and creatively.
Photography GCSE Exam Results 2025:
18% students achieving grade 7-9
57% students achieving grade 5-9
77% students achieving grade 4-9
100% students achieving a pass (U avoidance)
