Our Pastoral System

Our Pastoral Approach

At the heart of our school is a strong pastoral system that supports every student’s wellbeing, development, and sense of belonging. Our commitment to pastoral care begins early, with close collaboration with local primary schools. We offer a range of transition activities including Year 5 Taster Days, a Year 5 Festival of Sport, and a comprehensive Year 6 Transition Programme.

To ensure a smooth start to secondary school, our Year 7 students benefit from dedicated Learning Days at the beginning of the autumn term. These sessions are designed to help them settle in, build confidence, and form positive relationships with staff and peers.

We take the welfare and safeguarding of our students seriously. Our Pastoral Team is always on hand to provide guidance, support, and care, ensuring that every student feels safe, valued, and ready to thrive.

Our Pastoral and Safeguarding Team

Our Pastoral Team is central to the care and support we provide for every student. This team also encompasses our Safeguarding Team, ensuring that all aspects of student welfare are prioritised and protected.

Together, they work to create a safe, nurturing environment where students feel supported, listened to, and empowered to thrive both academically and personally.

Our Tutor Group System

We are proud of our unique tutor group model, which is designed to foster a strong sense of community, leadership, and support across all year groups.

From Monday to Thursday, students are placed in vertical tutor groups, where students from Year 7 through to Year 11 come together. This structure encourages mentoring, builds cross-year friendships, and strengthens our school community. It also provides opportunities for older students to take on leadership roles and support younger peers, all while following a carefully designed tutor programme.

On Fridays, students meet in year group tutor sessions,
where they alternate between year-specific activities and full year group
assemblies. This allows for targeted pastoral support, age-appropriate
guidance, and the celebration of collective achievements.

Our Heads of Year oversee the wellbeing and progress of students across all seven houses, supported by an Assistant Head of Year. Together, they ensure that every student is known, supported, and encouraged to reach their full potential.

Tutor and Assembly Programme

The Tutor and Assembly Programme is designed to support the content of the Personal Development, Citizenship, SMSC and British Values.  This ensures our students receive a comprehensive insight into the world around them.

This is delivered through Tuesday Personal Development tutor activities and the Assembly Programme, which is specific to our Awareness Days.  It is also delivered through the Friday Pastoral Curriculum; all via the tutors.

The History of our Name, Crest and Houses

House NAMES

The Henry Beaufort School was opened in September 1971. The school bears the name of a Bishop of Winchester who died in 1447. Henry Beaufort was Bishop of Winchester and three times Chancellor and is buried in Winchester Cathedral. He was a highly regarded representative of his country abroad.

In order to echo this connection with other countries and cultures, and looking forward to other European links through our International School award, European cities have been chosen as names of the seven faculties. Each of these cities has a connection with the curricular team to which it is linked:

House Captains

As the House System continues to build, in the academic year of 2023/2024 we introduced the role of House Captains to support the running of events, deciding winners of events and to have a presence within their house supporting the staff. Each house currently has 2 House Captains, 1 student in year 7 and 1 student in year 10. These students have been fantastic at house events and been great role models for students in their houses.
