  • Henry Beaufort Continues High Standards

    Dear Parents

    I am sure you are aware that currently there is much debate and discussion about the financial implications of cut backs in education and the pressures that are facing all schools in this current climate of austerity.

    No school is immune from the impact of the current climate. However, I wanted to take this opportunity to reassure you that the high standards of provision at The Henry Beaufort School will be maintained.

    The reduction in schools budgets is not a surprise. Leaders in education have been attempting to mitigate its impact for a number of years now. This has involved tough decisions, as well as a very thorough examination of how the school spends its money.

    We have through the information available to the school from the Local Authority, accounted for the proposed pay awards to support staff and teaching staff in our budget planning. Therefore, I am delighted to inform you that because of the prudent management of the school budget, the school is currently in an exceptionally strong position financially.

    We are fortunate to have a stable and experienced Senior Leadership and Support Staff team at The Henry Beaufort School who have worked hard to ensure that budget cutbacks do not have a negative impact on your child’s education. Our staffing numbers remains stable and I am proud to work with a staffing body committed to the progress and academic attainment of our students.

    This means that at The Henry Beaufort School we will continue with

    • Our commitment to flexible class sizes that suit the need of students
    • Our dedicated school bus service for all of our students who require bus travel to school, ‘door to door’
    • Our commitment to a late bus service so that all students can be fully involved in the wide range of extra-curricular activities that take place after school
    • Our commitment to offer exciting residential trips to places such as New York, the WW1 Battlefields, Finland and Italy, as well as Ski trips and a whole year group camping experience

    We are also working closely with the Local Authority on the school’s expansion plans and I am very excited by the opportunities that this will offer to all of our students. Currently, as well as general building plans to accommodate students from Kings Barton, we are looking at the provision of two new all-weather pitches at the bottom of the site.  The provisional plans also include opening up additional social areas for the children and these will be covered areas. Innovative teaching areas are being considered that will offer new and diverse learning environments for your children.

    I am looking forward to sharing these plans with you once they have been finalised.

    This will enhance the learning opportunities for all of our students in a school that is in seventh place [out of seventy schools] in the Hampshire Local Authority League tables and second in the League table for Winchester.

     I look forward to seeing you at your child’s Celebration Assembly at the end of term, if not before.

  • 2019 Rock Challenge┬«

    We are thrilled to announce our plans to take part in the 2019 Rock Challenge® production. Rock Challenge® is a Performing Arts competition for schools, colleges and youth groups that aspires to promote creativity, healthy lifestyles and education. It aims to show young people how they can achieve a natural ‘high’ without the use of tobacco, alcohol and other substances. 

    Our challenge will be to choreograph a performance, on a theme of our choice, which will be performed at a venue in our region in early 2019 (dates and locations tbc). Previous venues have included the Guildhalls in Southampton and Portsmouth. 

    On the day of the event each school will spend the day rehearsing, before performing to an audience of their peers, families and community members. The performances will be judged by a panel of professionals who work in the Performing Arts industry and awards will be presented at the end of the show. This project is open to students currently in Years 7 – 10. Auditions for students wishing to take part as a performer will be held on Wednesday 20thand Thursday 21stJune in the Concert Hall.

    There will be a variety of roles for students to take part in ranging from dancers and choreographers to a backstage crew and costume, hair, make up and set teams.

  • PGL Netball Weekend 2018

    On Friday 16thMarch 48 girls from Years 7-10 headed to the PGL centre in Liddington to take part in the PGL netball weekend. In total we had 6 teams entered across the age groups.

    As we arrived on the Friday lunch time and settled into our accommodation.  We then had an intensive netball coaching session run by resident netball expert Miss Elsdon. The girls were great and already excited for the tournament to begin on the Saturday. Friday night was the first night of evening activities where the girls got to take part in a variety of activities and begin to suss out their opposition!

    The girls on the Saturday would either have a morning of netball games followed by an afternoon of activities or vice versa.  The activities were located all around the PGL Liddington site and the students, once fitted with their harness were free to explore and ‘drop in’ to the different activities. This activities included, giant swing, rock climbing, abseiling and also a crazy mixture of trampolining and basketball. 

    The weekend as always, was superbly organised. The PGL staff put on great activities and England Netball ran and umpired the tournaments.

    Saturday was excellent and the girls played so well despite the freezing conditions and occasional snow flurries! Saturday night meant disco fun and the girls were off ready to make some shapes.  But it was to be an early night as the girls were ready for more competitive matches on Sunday and with the hope of making the semi-finals.
    However, Sunday morning, we awoke to a good covering of snow! The tournament had to be cut short – which was a real shame as the girls were doing so well and were very positive about the Sunday, but in the end we had to settle with a snow ball fight and a snowman building competition.

    We did attend the presentation where both the Year 7 and Year 9 A teams were presented with bronze medals as both teams were in 3rdplace at the end of play on Saturday. 

    However, what was fantastic and well deserved was that The Henry Beaufort School were awarded ‘Team of the Tournament’. Each umpire had a vote to select a team or school that showed a host of things and included fair play and respect to name a few. The girls were incredible all weekend, polite, well-mannered and always positive. What was also lovely was their encouragement for each other, they were always supporting each other and cheering on the different age group teams.

    Well done – and a big thank you to Miss Bean for organising it all.

  • The Henry Beaufort School Ski Trip 2018

    On Friday 30th March 44 excited students and 6 staff boarded the coach at school for what seem like a mammoth 24 hour journey to Les Deux Alpes to begin the fun week of skiing.

    The journey went incredibly quickly – the bulk of the distance happened during the night so the majority of the time was spent sleeping/trying to get comfortable! When we arrived in resort (4 hours ahead of schedule – unheard of!) we were greeted with blue skies and so much snow! 


    Students were quickly guided through ski fit, collecting skis, boots, poles and helmets. We then had a walk around the resort so the students became familiar with their surroundings. It was early to bed ready for skiing fun to start on the Sunday! 

    Ski lessons took place, everyday between 9am-11am. Then we headed back to the hotel for a lovely cooked lunch then back out for the afternoon lesson 1pm-3pm. All students were put into groups that contained between 10-12 students and they were taken out by instructors from Ecole du ski, Francais.  The skiing conditions were excellent – all students and teachers cooked on day 1 – it really wasn’t as cold as we thought, too many layers!

    The ski groups, as always progressed so quickly. The pro group who were nicknamed ‘champions’ by their instructors, were fearless! They gave everything a go! The beginners quickly mastered the art of being in control (most of the time!) and by day 3 were at the top of the piste attempting blue runs.  All groups made it up to the glacier which was incredible! The students were blown away with the stunning scenery. 

    Quote of the trip was Emma (Year 9) ‘ski fit did not prepare me for how much this hurt!’ – it quickly became apparent to all students that skiing as a sport  is incredibly demanding on every muscle that you did not know you had.

    We were so lucky with the weather – it was so sunny and by mid week we had a good coverage of fresh snow – ideal!

    Each evening we had our evening meal together.  At the end of the meal the ‘danger band’ was awarded to a particular student, that had, during the day cheated death or had an impressive fall.  It was a hi-viability band to ensure other skiers were aware of the hazard coming! Each evening there were many nominations for this award – the final recipient who kept the band was danger Lucy (Year 10). 

    Each evening there were apres ski activities; which during the week included; a town trail with hot chocolate, bowling, sledging fun/carnage, film night and then a presentation evening on the last night. During the presentation evening a number of awards were given to students for a variety of categories including, perseverance; cheating death; gentleman conduct and many more. 

    The week flew by and before we knew it the final day of skiing was over and we were boarding the coach for the return journey. It was a great week; the students were incedible  and hopefully some of them now have the bug for skiing!

    Big thanks to Mr Janes and Mr Naisbitt who organised and ran this incredibly successful trip which required a lot of hard work and effort to ensure it ran so smoothly.

  • The Henry Beaufort School Bridging the Gap between Deaf and Non-Deaf Students

    The Hearing Impaired Unit at The Henry Beaufort School was delighted to hear that The Silent Child received an Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film, bringing deaf awareness to the forefront.

    The Henry Beaufort School resource base, that supports students with various degrees of hearing impairment, provides specialist provision in total communication support, which includes oral and British Sign Language (BSL).

    Alison Strevens, Teacher of the Deaf, commented: “As a deaf friendly school, we are excited by the impact The Silent Child is having by raising awareness of the barriers that deaf children can experience, particularly in accessing education. Our students are fortunate in that they have support from specialist teaching assistants and teachers who are fully trained in meeting the needs of our deaf students in order to access the curriculum.”

    The Henry Beaufort School provides a weekly signing club for all students and staff (deaf and non-deaf) to learn BSL. Lessons are delivered by Deaf Instructor, Emillie Bailey, who herself is profoundly deaf. 

    Emillie Bailey continued: “The club is voluntary and extremely popular. I would fully support the introduction of BSL in the national curriculum as it would open up far more opportunities for the deaf community and help bridge the gap between deaf and non-deaf people.”




    The Silent Child

    • The Silent Child film is about a profoundly deaf four year old girl named Libby who is born into a middle class family and lives in a world of silence until a caring social worker teaches her the gift of communication. For further information see:

    The Henry Beaufort School – Hearing Impaired Unit (HIU)

    • The Henry Beaufort School is a mainstream comprehensive secondary school with a specialist resource base for the hearing impaired.  
    • The aims of the HIU are:
      • To provide the resources, expertise and support to enable students to realise their full potential: educationally, socially and personally.
      • To develop their self-esteem, have ownership of their own learning and be valued members of the school community.
    • Established in 1995, the present suite of rooms was purpose built in 2010 to provide an optimal acoustic environment for students.
    • The Unit includesa suite of eight rooms including a large meeting room, three tutorial rooms and an audiology room.  This enables the students to work in a quiet area to develop their speech and listening skills.
    • Staffed by an experienced team consisting of a Teacher of the Deaf, Communication and Learning Support Assistants, and a Deaf Instructor.

    Communications Policy

    •  The Henry Beaufort School follows a Total Communications Policy.
    • Staff are experienced in working with both oral and signing students.
    • British Sign Language (BSL) classes are run for the whole school community by the school’s Deaf Instructor and Communication Support Assistant. The Deaf Instructor runs individualised BSL lessons for the hearing impaired students.
    • A weekly BSL signing club is available to all members of the school.
    • Every student has a personal up-to-date radio aid system to provide maximum access to the curriculum and enhance their listening experience in mainstream classes
