This week, Henry Beaufort School has been host to Vice-Principal Cao Thi Lan Huong from Xa Dan school in Hà Nội , Vietnam.
The visit has been made possible thanks to the successful application for a DFID Global School Partnerships grant and serves as one of the first steps towards joint curricular projects between the schools.
Nearly half of Xa Dan school’s students are speech and hearing impaired, an important international link made particularly valuable for Henry Beaufort’s own Hearing Impaired Unit (HIU).
The aim of the partnership is to explore and exchange effective practice for the teaching and learning of hearing impaired students, whilst exposing students to similarities and differences in lifestyle, culture and values, with particular focus on deaf culture and disability groups.
During her visit to the school, Ms Huong spent time with the HIU discussing deaf education with staff and students and experienced the different methods Henry Beaufort uses to support the varying needs of the HIU students. Ms Huong witnessed day-to-day life at Henry Beaufort, sitting in on a variety of different lessons and attending a Whole School Student Council meeting.
As well as enjoying the rare spell of snow, Ms Huong was treated to a tour of Winchester and its historic attractions and invited to evening dinners hosted by Ben Lovett, International Links Coordinator and Alison Taggart, who will be making an exchange visit to Xa Dan during the Easter break.
Before returning home, Ms Huong will visit the modern and historic attractions in Portsmouth followed by a couple of nights in London.
